4 Tips for Cleaning up that Hoarding Mess
Cleaning up a house that someone has hoarded stuff for years or even decades can be testing not only to your mental health but also your physical well being. Most often than not the mess is overwhelming and sometimes it can threaten your health. When things set too long they start to grow bacteria and mold, and certain little critters also like to call it home too because what better place to live than somewhere where no one else is going to mess with your home, right? The following tips might help you get over that feeling of being overwhelmed or even save you that trip to the doctors:
1. You are going to want to protect yourself from those bacteria and mold so make sure to bring protective equipment like gloves and face masks. You are potentially exposing yourself to many hazards that would bring you to the doctors, or even the hospital like, Hantavirus, Histoplasmosis, E.coli, and staph. You cannot clean up that mess if you are at a doctor's appointment, so make sure to always keep your health a priority and wear your protective equipment.
2. A way to combat that sense of being overwhelmed a little is to create three piles. Trash, donate, and then keep. Just keep in mind that sometimes things that are broken usually don't have an effective use for you or someone else. Things that haven’t been used in a year, usually aren’t going to be used as well.
3. Understand that hoarding is more than just keeping items, it is also a cause from a mental disorder according to the ADAA. “Hoarding can exist on its own or in the form of symptom of some other disorder. Those most often associated with hoarding are obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression.”
4. Sometimes the mess is more than a one-man job and you might need help. It’s okay to ask for it, cleaning up a hoarding mess can be a lot of work. Occasionally to a hoarder, it’s hard to let go of something and they might need to seek professional help in order to let go. You might also need some else’s skills for certain messes, like unattended fecal matter from an animal or animals that someone was hoarding, or maybe there was a death that wasn’t taken care of. There is plenty of help you could ask for, an extra set of hands or even a company that specializes in biohazard cleanup.
